The Onion Bag Christmas Carol - remastered
2007 was quite a year for football. The new Wembley was finally opened seven years after the old one had been demolished, the Premiership changed its name to the Premier League, Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho, Steve McLaren was failing to qualify for the Euros, and David Beckham turned his back on Europe to play for LA Galaxy.
More money than ever was pouring into football but not everyone was doing well. Leeds United, six years after being in a Champions League semi-final, were relegated to League One after having gone into administration.
It was a time when anything seemed possible, and was fertile ground if, like us, you were writing satire based on football. That Christmas, Graham and Terry decided to try making a podcast and came up with a retelling of Dicken's Christmas Carol based around the world of modern football, using many of the themes they wrote about for The Onion Bag.
Terry played Ebeneezer Scrooge, a free-spending Premier League chairman always on the look out to add to his already bloated squad. He also provided the voice of Onion Bag stalwart Johnny Pundit, the Ghost of Transfer Windows Past. Graham narrated and played several characters, including Scrooge’s more pragmatic predecessor Jacob Marley, and Silvio “Il Duce” Burlesconi, the Ghost of Transfer Windows Present.
When we created the podcast, we had little experience of audio editing and frankly it showed. This Chrtistmas we've given the audio a bit a polish to make it more listenable. Unfortunately, we couldn't do much with the acting.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
