England manager, Svengali Erikson told the Onion bag that James Beattie’s late call-up to the England squad for the friendly against Denmark had been a genuine mistake and would never happen again. He went on to say that by clarifying the situation he hoped that the whole sorry mess would be behind the squad and that they could continue with there build up to the European championships in Portugal.

When asked to clarify if it been a mistake to call him so late or if it had been a mistake to call him up at all Sven said "yes, exactly that, now let’s move on, next question."

"Well what is it?" insisted our perplexed reporter. At this, the England supremo became quite animated. And let off a torrent of barbed sound-bites.

“I’ve made myself clear, it was a mistake, happy? Well are you? I said it was a mistake, so there you have it. Look deeply into my eyes, you are feeling very sleeeeeeeepy….”

The reporter has since given up smoking and knows all the moves to the macarena.

Chris Sutton and Andy Cole were unavailable to comment.
